Bailey Weaver (11) looks to find an open teammate.

After coming off of an 8-18 season last year the Fair Grove Lady Eagles started off their home tournament with with a loss this year. Katelyne Cloyd says she felt it was a good start off to the year but they didn’t get the turnout they quite expected, they still learned a lot of great things about their team and what they need to do to fix it. “I feel like we improved on being able to break a press and working more as a team,” stated Cloyd.

Bailey Weaver says that they started off rough this year but they are coming together. “We definitely competed,” Bailey adds, “We played some tough teams and we learned a lot.” It was a really close game but the Eagles just couldn’t come out with a win. They competed very well with every team in the tournament, but they lost their first game to Aurora, 57 to 59. They then played Lebanon with another close game only losing by ten, the score was 49-59. The last game of the tournament they played Buffalo to another close game, 51 to 57.

Although they didn’t do as well as they wanted to they still learned about a lot of the things that they need to work on to get to that championship level Cloyd says. One thing that she thinks that they need to improve on is finishing out the quarters a little better, “But with the hard work we are doing in practice I am sure that we can do it.”  Bailey Weaver also adds in that they should treasure every possession and not just waste them with a quick shot and really work the ball around like a team. Weaver says that some of their goals this year are to continue competing and getting better with each game and winning tournaments and hopefully win districts.

Update on 12/18: Since this article was written, the Lady Eagles have won two games in a row, beating South Washburn 57-44 and beating Mount Vernon 59-55. Their next game is December 27 at 12:30pm in the Pink and White Tournament against West Plains.
