Arming teachers in America seems to be the new, but controversial trend. Many states have discussed passing laws to allow this. Also many rural schools are participating due to the timely manner of police responses. But is arming a teacher a good idea? And will it really prevent, or help in these types of situations?
I feel that arming teachers is not going to help accomplish much. While the thought is initially a good thought, the underlying threats and mishaps make the cons out weigh the pros. If a student came into a school and started shooting, how many teachers would be able to stand there and pull the trigger to kill a student they have watched learn and grow in their classroom? You could argue that the heat of the moment and adrenaline would help you do it, but would it really? I don’t believe that even if a teacher didn’t have the student in class, or that they didn’t get along, that a teacher could kill a young adult, or child. Some people have a hard time being able to just shoot an animal. How would they be able to kill a human?
There is also having to keep the weapon in a secure place. Where would they put it? Teachers would have to keep it in a place where students couldn’t get to it. The argument made is that students should know better than to mess with a weapon, but are 1st grade students really going to know not to mess with something new they find? I think not. They are going to try and play with it and show it to other kids. Then what? Are you going to punish them for something they don’t know better than? Even if that wasn’t an issue, a teacher would have to get the weapon out of a secure location which could draw attention to them, along with being time consuming. If a shooter is right outside your door, you aren’t going to have time to get the gun out, if it is actually secure where students could not get to it.
I believe the thought of having armed teachers to protect students is initially a good idea. With the underlying threats and mishaps that can occur, I don’t think that teachers being armed is going to help enough to outweigh the possibility of something going wrong.
