On Friday, November 6th, the middle school hosted it’s annual Career Day and the students welcomed four guest speakers to talk about the ins and outs of their jobs. These speakers included current and previous faculty members and various members of the community.

Middle School counselor, Linda Buckner, says, “The purpose of Career Day is to expose students to a variety of careers to see if they would like to pursue one that is shared or one that is similar. It also encourages students to start thinking about their futures.”

This year they were visited by Cammy Rainwater, the manager of ShadowBrook Stables, Neil Kastler, of the Greene County Criminal Investigations Division, Lisa Bernet, the Director of Human Resources & Communications for the school district, and Independent Investor of a rental property, and Jeremy Clopton, a Certified Fraud Examiner and Data Analytic Specialist.

Previous Fair Grove middle school math and science teacher, Detective Corporal Neil Kastler, was one of the speakers who came to speak to the students on Career Day. Kastler currently works in the Criminal Investigations Division in Greene County and enjoys talking to students because he feels like he is helping by sharing with them the information needed now in order to set them up for success in the future. “Being in law enforcement, you need to be able to talk to people in different settings. “If a student was interested in entering this profession, I would tell him/her to make good, positive choices and understand how making bad decisions now might ruin your life or career choice later. I would stress that education and being honest is important as well as keeping out of trouble and obeying laws. Also when old enough to do explorer programs or ride alongs, they should definitely get involved in that,” advised Kastler.

November and December are months where the middle school teachers focus on career exploration. Career Day is an expansion of this exploration and gives students a chance to hear about different career paths and ask questions directly to those in the career they may be interested in. Eighth graders will be diving deeper into their futures when they take part in job shadowing on Wednesday, December 2nd.
