Helping The Earth One Step at A Time

The Fair Grove School District has been coming together to help the earth by recycling used paper from all of the school buildings.

The Fair Grove Green Team is a High School club ran by Sarah Englis. The club gets together once or twice a week to collect recycled paper. At the beginning of the school year, one or more students from each advisory period were required to join the green team club. Nicholas Hamp (11) commented, “Usually once or twice a week where they will go out to the classroom assigned and remove the recycling, and take it to the big green dumpster outside the band room doors.”

The paper that is collected by these students is turned into cat litter. After the members are done collecting the recycling, they are able to return to their designated advisory class. Last year, students in Englis’ PBL class came together for a recycling project and ended up bringing funding for the school to purchase water bottle fillers to place around the high school. Samantha Horvath (12) stated, “I traveled to the Springfield City Hall to sit and see if the grant we worked hard for was processed and accepted.”

Many recycling bins around the school district have tags on them that say if the bins are filled to contact one of the leaders. Some of these Green Team leaders include Lauren Kennard, Matthew Sutherland, and Tanner Lumley.

Green Team member, Preston Kothenbeutel, expressed, “Recycle and be happy by making the planet happy.”
