X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a prequel film to the 2000 film X-Men that follows James “Logan” Howlett (Hugh Jackman) as he rampages through the United States on a revenge path to kill his brother Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber) also known as sabertooth to avenge the death of his girlfriend.

This film is all over the place with tone, it starts out with both Logan and Victor in the early 1800s as children. Logan’s Dad is then shot and killed by Victor’s father. This event triggers Logan to use his claws for the first time to stab Victor’s father who then reveals Logan’s true heritage with his final breath. The scene that follows is a masterpiece of a montage spanning from the American Civil War to the Vietnam war.

Soon after the end of the montage ends we’re introduced to William Stryker (Danny Huston) who approaches Logan and Victor stating that he is forming a team of other mutants to run black ops missions for the United States government. Time passes and Logan is told to execute civilians which he refuses and walks away abandoning his brother and his team.

This opening segment is honestly the highlight of the movie. It’s a bit cartoonish and cheesy at times but in the funniest way possible, the dialogue isn’t the best but at this point is possible. This opening segment also includes the first appearance of Ryan Renoalds as Deadpool who is a fairly comic accurate character in this portion of the movie which makes it all the adder whenever his character gets warped to the point that he’s unrecognizable from the comic version.

Overall I think this movie gets more hate than it deserves, sure this film is packed with poor CGI and cartoonish choreography and cheesy dialogue but it’s still enjoyable. I can honestly say that I enjoy this movie and find it incredibly fun to turn off my brain and watch.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine sits at a solid 6/10 for me. Its enjoyable for both hardcore X-Men fans and casual couch potatos looking for a fun time without needing to use your brain much and highly suggest having a viewing with friends in the near future.
