To the Finish Line

At Fair Grove High School, the track team is starting off strong with the new and adjustable season.
Last year the track team didn’t get to have a season. The kids are extremely excited and more motivated because of the time they missed from last year. “We are preparing by practicing every day after school doing workouts on the track and in the weight room,” commented Kurt Buckman (10).
The team is going to be very flexible this year in how they are able to compete. Esais Baird (10) said, “This year we have a few different meets. There are some new faces and we lost a couple people who’ve graduated or gotten hurt. Last year we only made it to spring break.”
Track consists of different events, which include different distances of running, vaulting, throwing, long jump, high jump, and a few more. “The main reason why I chose my events was because I do not like any distance running event, but I do like sprinting and the sprinting events, and my dad was also the one who got me involved in pole vaulting,” added Baird.
“COVID has a big effect on the entire sport. There are multiple schools at every meet with a good number at every event. For my event, there isn’t a whole lot of contact with people but the surrounding itself can be effective,” added Baird.
The athletes have a positive attitude and outlook for their season. Buckman said, “I expect that this track season will make me better in my other sport, which is football. I also expect to get faster and stronger this season.”
Overall the season will be changed just as much as every other sport this year. Off season was a way to get prepared for the new year and new faces. Baird commented, “I feel that I need more time to put in work to make sure everything is set for our first meet. Progress is being made everyday. I’ll be ready soon.”
