Powder Puff: Nerds Beat Jocks

October 13, 2021

The Nerds Powder Puff team and their cheerleaders after their win at Powder Puff on 9/29.

Put on by FBLA and DECA for the Fair Grove community, the annual Powder Puff game was held Wednesday, September 29th.

The Powder Puff game is when some of the students get to switch roles for a night. The girls become the football players and the boys are the cheerleaders. However, the girls are not playing regular football, but instead are playing flag football. The game also supports the Heart to Heart Foundation which supports the surgeries of children diagnosed with Congenital Heart Defect.

FBLA is in charge of planning the Powder Puff game. Thomlinson recalled, “It takes a few weeks to plan everything. We come up with a theme and from there we get people to sign up for it and make sure everything is planned for the day of the event.” Fritts also mentioned that promoting the event is one of the most important parts of planning for Powder Puff.

Each year there is a theme for the Powder Puff game. FBLA officer, Lauren Thomlinson (10) stated, “The hardest part is picking a theme for the game.” This year the theme is Jocks vs Nerds, with the jocks being purple and the nerds pink.

Each team has a football player as their coach. The coaches were able to schedule practices for their teams in preparation of the big game. One of the coaches this year, FBLA officer, Kyle Fritts (12), stated, “We have practices to ensure my team is the best they can possibly be… I can’t tell you everything, but we work on formation and play-calling.”

The Powder Puff game is for anyone who wants to participate, Fritts says, “The atmosphere is just so fun, and I love seeing my players’ faces when something good happens.” The members of FBLA encourage people to participate in the game and have a good time.

Thomlinson remarked, “My favorite part is participating in the game itself. It’s a lot of fun to play against your friends.” Fritts also went on to state, “My favorite part is probably just seeing the community come together. It’s amazing that everyone comes out to support FBLA and DECA.”

The Powder Puff game happens every year, and they are always wanting people to come out and participate. If you are interested in participating next year, don’t be afraid to sign up to play or to be a cheerleader.
