November 9, 2021

FG Choir: Top Row: Matt Cockroft (12), Carter Emery (12), Easton Beltz (12) Middle Row: Aeryn Maskew (12), Shanda Hills (11), Hadison Wingo (10) Bottom Row: Torii Dugan (12), Hannah Bruner (10).

Choir is gearing up for a great deal of exciting events coming soon. Including, but not limited to, the Veterans Day Assembly, the Thanksgiving Lunch, and Christmas Concert.

A typical choir class consists of learning a new song or rehearsing an old one. This is not a simple process and every day of rehearsal is a little different. Audra Harmon conducts the class, and Cindy Sparks plays piano for the accompaniment while the choir sings on the rafters. Easton Beltz (12), a long time choir student, stated, “Choir is structured to be a relaxed but efficient class.”

This year’s choir is composed of eight people: three sopranos, two altos, one tenor and two basses. This includes Tori Dugan, Matt Cockroft, Easton Beltz, Carter Emery, Hannah Bruner, Aeryn Maskew, and Hadi Wingo. The group is small but working hard. Beltz explained, “I feel this year we have a very small but very committed and dedicated choir.”

Of this group, five are seniors. There are some very strong voices in the choir this year including Beltz who made All-District choir and will be auditioning for All-State choir. They also have a great mix of high and low voices, which means there are many options to what they can sing.

There are many concerts coming up such as the Christmas concert in December. This means they have a lot to prepare for. They are working on a wide variety of pieces this year. For Veteran’s Day they perform the Star Spangled Banner, America, and the New Colossus. For the Thanksgiving Lunch they will perform Harvest Moon, An Irish Blessing, and Bless This House. They are also working on a lot of Christmas songs such as Little Town of Bethlehem.

While they are working hard to perfect all these songs, choir is still an enjoyable class to partake in according to the students. Matt Cockroft (12) explained, “The atmosphere is chill; we have a lot of fun conversations.”

“It has a very warm and inviting atmosphere. I love being in choir because we really are a family,” Beltz stated. Choir members share a special connection with each other. With the small numbers, they are all a close knit group who share a passion for music.

Cockroft exclaimed, “I love singing, so yes I do love choir.” Coming together to sing is a simple joy in life that choir students love and get to experience everyday. Beltz shared, My favorite part of choir has to be the family dynamic that we all share.”
