Students Dance For Joy With The New Middle School Dance Club

Ms. Stallings teaches her dance club kids (Eli Baston, Malachai Cavanaugh, and Keira Marion-Swan) to learn new material.

Fair Grove Middle School recently started a new Dance Club, the idea coming from a student, hosted by Ms. Stallings that takes place in her classroom after school on Tuesdays.

The newest Middle School club, Dance Club, has about 10 students in every meeting. The meetings start directly after school on Tuesdays and end around 4:15 to 4:30. Every meeting starts with a warmup workout and then they learn new choreography or practice what they have previously learned.

This new club originated from a middle school student who wanted a way to express his love of dance. Malachai Cavanaugh (5) is the brain behind the club and most of the reason it was started.

“So it all started whenever I was like 2 or 3. I love dancing and I figured there should be a place for everyone…” Cavanaugh continued, “But in the dance club, we will be able to express it to the world; well not the world, but you get it.”

“I expect it to be a place where everyone can have fun, not to just dance but to be together like we’re going to go to games and fun stuff,” Cavanaugh exclaimed. He’s put a lot of effort into getting this club going.

In order to have this idea become a reality for Cavanaugh and his fellow club members, he had to find a teacher to sponsor his club. He chose to ask his Middle School fifth grade science teacher, Haley Stallings. After finding his sponsor, he had to create a presentation for Marc Green (Middle School Principal) on why he thought they should make this a club in the middle school.

“I chose to sponsor this club because students expressed interest in it and I want to give every student a chance to be involved in something they love,” stated Stallings. The club is meant to keep the students interested and enjoying their time as well as learn a good dance lesson.

Stallings shared, “The students have a plan of performing their dance during halftime of a basketball game. I believe that will be a pretty good indicator of how hard they have worked.” They haven’t set a date for that show yet, but they plan to do so within a certain time frame.
