A Day to Connect Generations
September 29, 2022
The Fair Grove Elementary held their annual Grandparents Day on Friday, September 16, 2022, gym packed with grandparents.
Grandparents Day is a day that Fair Grove Elementary students and their grandparents look forward to. Amy Crandall, a first grade teacher at Fair Grove Elementary, said, “The kids love Grandparents Day. It is most of the student’s favorite day of the year. There is nothing better than having a grandparent or another special person spend the day with them.” The social aspect of this day is great along with there being so much joy, love, and happiness in the building. “The kids are proud to have their Grandparents at school and the Grandparents are always proud of their grandchild.” stated Crandall.
The community and the school felt this year’s day with the students and their grandparents was the best one yet. This year, there were over 900 grandparents and special people in attendance for the event. “The exciting part of this event is that many of the grandparents were students at Fair Grove elementary school, and returning as a grandparent is a very special experience,” explained Heather Lumley, a Fair Grove Elementary Music Teacher, “the school district, teachers, and staff, are always happy to welcome them back.” Furthermore, Crandall stated, “There is so much community support and love. The community, including the parents and grandparents, are happy to be able to come into our school building.”
Preparing for this day is extensive work for teachers and administrators. Especially for Charity Holland, the Elementary Principal, since she took over planning Grandparents Day this year. Crandall said, “The week of Grandparent’s Day we spend time making special crafts and projects for the kids and their grandparents. We take pictures to hand to them. We also learn songs to sing and poems to recite. In my class we do a lot of talking about our grandparents and what makes them unique. I do a project and have a compiled list of the cute things my students say about grandparents, it’s priceless.”
This day is packed with things for all the kids to do. They have classroom activities which are different in every class, professional photos, the Book Fair, and the playground. To start off, the grandparents are sent to an assembly where the Elementary Principal, Holland gives a speech and the first graders perform poems. “Once finished, the grandparents will be welcomed by students, then proceed to each classroom for a special activity and cookies,” stated Holland.
Grandparents Day is an ongoing tradition for the Fair Grove youth that brings together family within the community.
