Originally The Sound of Music was a stage musical based on Maria Von Trapp’s memoir. I will be discussing the 1965 film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. While overall the story is roughly based on a true story, it is not completely historically accurate; things were added to the plot to make it more interesting.

This is one of my favorite musicals in existence. There is not a single song in this musical that I’m not in love with. The scenery is absolutely stunning throughout the movie. The plot has drama, romance, comedy, and even at the end a little action. I absolutely love the underlying theme of how powerful women are. There is such a large cast but every character has a very strong and individual personality.

I honestly have very few complaints about the Sound of Music. The baroness is not the villain they portray her as. She finally meets her long term boyfriend’s children and when she gets there, there is a beautiful governess who all of the children are in love with. Her boyfriend proposes and she accepts, but the whole time she is staying with him he is flirting with this governess, Maria. She even catches them outside during her welcoming party sharing a very intimate dance. She becomes a little insecure and tells Maria he is in love with her and Maria leaves. Besides that she makes one small mention of boarding school for the children, she really didn’t do anything terrible. She is even very understanding when he tells her that he can’t marry her because he loves Maria.

I also wish there was more closure. Yes, they escaped from the Nazis into the hills, but what happened after that? Were they just stranded in the mountains for the rest of their lives? Did someone in Poland help them? I just feel like the beginning of the movie moves slowly, and I love that, don’t get me wrong, but they had to rush the rest of the plot in the last 20 minutes of the movie.
