Middle School Art Club attendees Adley McMillian (5), Sam McCarthy (5), and Presley Mauldin (5) (Left to Right), create clay pumpkins for a project on 10/14.

Each Wednesday, from 3:40 to 4:30, students of the Fair Grove Middle School gather together in the middle school art room, ready to pursue a passion in art.

The Middle School Art Club is led by Sandra Hammers. Hammers also takes part in the Fair Grove Art department as a Middle School Art Teacher. Middle School Art Club is open to all middle school students, 5th to 8th grade. Hammers announced, “Art Club is a place where kids, who enjoy art, can relate to other kids. You don’t even have to be good at art.”

Middle schoolers get the decision between Art, Music, or Band. Hammers stated, “Art Club has allowed time for students to create art that they are passionate about. It gives the opportunity to kids who are participating in the Middle School Band.”

Zoe Drake (8), a long-time Middle School Art Club attendee, said, “I joined the Art Club because I wanted to take my art outside of my scheduled class. It’s also a great time and way for middle schoolers to hang out with their friends that they may not have in class throughout the school day.” Drake also added, “On a normal day of Art Club, Mrs. Hammers usually will have us work on a project that we can continue every Wednesday. Though some days when we don’t have a specific project, we get to have free time to express ourselves on anything that involves art.”

Hammers went on to explain that she has big plans for this years group of middle schoolers. She explained, “A variety of activities will take place in the Art Club. Some days we will have organized activities that fit into the school year’s season. Other days we will have open studio time for individual creativity. It’s all about letting the kids express themselves in the way of art.”

The Fair Grove Art Department would like this year’s Art Club to be a little different than the traditional previous years. Hammers went further by saying, “I would love to create art for the Fair Grove community, and maybe schedule a field trip to an art museum, gallery, or public exhibit. Something that could grasp the rich history of art in the world.”

The Middle School Art Club’s first meeting will start on Wednesday, October the 20th from 3:40 to 4:30.
