Starting 2022 Right

January 18, 2022

Whether it’s to work out more, eat healthier, or be more productive, many kids around Fair Grove are setting goals and making resolutions for the new year.

For some students, making resolutions for themselves is important for self-growth. “I feel that setting goals for yourself is very important, generally because if you never set goals for yourself to improve your lifestyle you will never learn or grow with anything. You’ll basically just stay on this steady playing field your entire life and never actually accomplish anything that you feel is meaningful and that makes you feel good,” commented Stephanie Dunham (10). Paige Robinson (12) said, “I think setting goals is important so that you can feel a sense of pride and accomplishment in yourself.”

Evyn Jones (10) shared another reason why she feels goals are helpful for anyone. “Looking at yourself and seeing what needs to be fixed is something many people have trouble doing.”

New Year’s resolutions are commonly centered around health and fitness. Robinson stated, “I don’t have a specific New Year’s resolution this year. However, I’m just trying to focus on my overall health in general. I’m trying to improve both my mental and physical health, and I plan to do this by focusing on building my relationships and just developing better eating and sleeping habits.” Jones added that she wants to improve at the sports she plays and make healthier eating choices and Stephanie Dunham mentioned that she wants more consistency in her workouts.

A very common issue with the idea of resolutions is that many of them don’t last halfway through January. However, there are some strategies you can take to prevent this. Dunham described her plans to meet her goals this year, “This year I have been treating my resolutions/goals a little differently by doing a couple of things. First off, I have a habit tracker to make sure that I am meeting all of my goals every single day, and so that I don’t forget to do anything.”

Finally, Dunham also explained a great mentality to go into 2022 with. “I have this mindset that there are no excuses to keep me from doing the things I need to do. If I try to make an excuse like, ‘Oh, I can just do it later,’ I stop and I say to just do it. There’s nothing stopping you, so why not?”
