Middle School Cheer During Basketball Season

January 21, 2022

As the middle school basketball season is coming to an end, the middle school cheer season is ending as well.

The middle school cheer squad has been cheering at games of all sorts throughout the school year. However, as the year progresses, different cheers and chants are required from the squad.

Lydia McCormack, the middle school cheer coach, explained, “We frequently use the cheers L-E-T-S-G-O, Go F-G, and F-A-I-R G-R-O-V-E because they are easy, repetitive cheers that the crowd can join in on.”

Chemistry and communication are important parts of any group activity; that includes cheer. Teammates on the cheer squad need to be able to communicate when to lift someone up in a stunt and when to help them down or else injuries or other problems may occur.

As far as the team chemistry and how well the team gets along, McCormack explained, “The team chemistry this year is great. We had a couple of problems with communication, but for the most part everyone gets along and builds each other up.”

Cheering, in general, helps make the atmosphere of games more exciting. “When the girls get excited at games, the fans cheer louder and the players are more motivated,” shared McCormack.

As the year has progressed, many memories have been shared throughout the entire team. McCormack explained, “My favorite part of cheerleading is cheering at games. I love to see all our practice pay off in sharp performances and leading the crowd in supporting our athletic teams.”

Cheers and chants don’t just come together over night. It takes hours of practice and dedication from the team and the coaches to make them come together. Just as in every other sport, practice makes perfect.

With the season coming to an end, many friendships have been built and will be cherished. McCormack shared, “I have enjoyed watching the girls grow together and become better friends throughout the season.”

Off-season cheer is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Saturdays from 3:30-5:30. On Tuesdays, the squad meets in the Fair Grove High School gym. On Thursdays the squad meets in the weight room for workouts and Saturdays are determined the week before at practice.
