Fair Grove High School empty on a snow day.

Fair Grove Schools has had a rough winter this school year, with nine snow days and four of them having to be made up on Mondays. The students have mixed feelings on making these snow days up on Mondays or at the end of the year.

AMI days are a newer addition to Fair Grove’s snow day routine, students can do their schoolwork from home so that they do not have to make up that snow day. Mckenzie Chandler (12) stated, “I do not like AMI days, the reason being because I feel better in the classroom than doing it online. I also have a lot of questions so it is difficult some days.”

Not all students dislike AMI days though, some see benefits from them. Olivia Brumfield (11) in particular, “It’s a lot easier to learn math, etc, when I can pause the video or go faster than usual. It makes it easier for me to spend more time on the things that are harder, and keeps me from wasting time on things I already understand.”

A lot of the reason most students like AMI days is so they don’t have to make up school on Mondays, Lauren Thomlinson (11) is one of those students, “Having a five day school week makes me super tired at the end of the week. I have no motivation when Friday rolls around and my days get all messed up.”

Not all students are really affected by the five day school week though, just a little schedule change. They don’t think AMI days are worth not having that five day week. Chandler remarked, “The five school days are not a bother to me, I just have to remember to get up Monday morning and to finish the last couple of problems of my homework on Sunday, not Monday.”

Not all students can agree on when the best time is to make up snow days. Chandler would prefer the end of the year in order to avoid AMI days. Brumfield believes, “The end of the year because by the end of the year you’re already having fun most of the time, and it’s nice to have little breaks throughout the year. I don’t mind going into summer because I’m about to have a lot of time off.”

However, Thomlinson prefers making the snow days up on Mondays because she is not okay with the school year rolling over into her summer.

When it comes to snow days, it is difficult to please everyone; Fair Grove plans to continue doing what they deem best for teachers and students alike.
