Off-Season Weights is run by Fair Grove football coach Bill Voorhis. It allows athletes, or anybody that wants to come after school, to workout.

Off-Season Weights are in action three times a week. Voorhis explained, “We run off-season weights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.” Attendance of kids coming to weights is not a problem at all. “We have around 50 kids each day for workouts,” added Voorhis. Even though the weight room isn’t a huge area, the kids make it work.

Cooper Roy (12) is a football player that is very involved in after school weights. What’s really important for a workout environment is the atmosphere. Roy explained, “The atmosphere is good, everyone brings good energy.” Voorhis added, “The kids are working very hard.”

Of course, the coaches have a huge effect on the environment, and Roy said they are good at keeping the environment positive. “The coaches we have during after school weights help bring the energy,” added Voorhis.

There are always leaders and Coach Voorhis said, “The upperclassmen have been doing a great job leading and making a good impression.” As a senior, Roy lifts everyday and he added, “The upperclassmen are good leaders, and make sure they are pushing themselves and others to be the best version of themselves.”

The underclassmen have surprised Roy and Voorhis with how hard they work. “The younger classes surprise me with their dedication,” included Roy.

Off-season weights are open to all Fair Grove students, but the majority are athletes. “Most of the kids that attend off-season weights are athletes here at FG,” Voorhis explained. He added, “We have athletes from every sport that plays in the fall and spring.”

Oakland-Wayne Morrison (11) is one upperclassman that has worked hard and improved greatly. He talked about his goals, “I want to increase all my lifts, but especially squat and clean.”

“The goal is to build a foundation that our athletes can take into their next sport,” Voorhis explained. Every one of these kids have goals, and Cooper Roy’s is simple enough, “I lift everyday; my goals are to get big.”
