The Fair Grove Golf team hit off the new season with their first tournament on April 3rd at Clever.

Coach Bryan Tucker is currently in his 6th year of coaching golf, and has loved every moment of it so far. His favorite thing about getting to coach golf is being outside and because, “It is a fun sport to see kids compete in.”

Practice for golf began March 7th. Locations for practices can vary from the FEMA, the field next to the FEMA, or Springfield Golf and Country Club. The team’s first tournament was April 3rd at Clever. Without much time to rest, they had another one April 6th at Seymour.

The Golf season does not last much longer than a month but the boys have to squeeze in seven tournaments, districts, and the state competition. Even though their schedule may seem busy, some boys say that it is a good way to let go of some stress and tension.

Atticus Brandes (10) has been playing golf since he was just five years old. “It is fun and a good way to clear your mind,” explained Atticus.

When COVID hit, many things shut down and people were cramped inside. Spensar Seiger (10), however, saw this as an opportunity to unlock a new hobby. Spensar took up golfing to pass time and ended up falling in love with it. When asked what the sport means to him now, Spensar replied, “Peace, golf just brings peace to my life.”

For sophomore Kyle Winterberg this will be his first year playing golf as a part of a team. Kyle has played on par 3 courses but has never had the experience of playing with a school on the level he will be playing on. His favorite thing about golf, as he describes it is, “A fun sport that just takes off any stress I have.

Kyle said golf has always interested him and he has found it a fun sport to play. “I wasn’t playing any other sports so I thought I might as well just play golf,” explained Kyle.

Haydn Hall (12) has been playing golf his entire high school career. He got into golf with his father and grandfather when he was in the 8th grade. “The best part of golf has to be the course itself because of how simple it is and how beautiful a golf course can be with the live animals and calming water,” explained Haydn.

For Haydn, golf is more than just a sport. “The game itself has a deep meaning to me because it brought my family and I closer together and make great memories,” described Haydn.

Golf is a sport that many athletes can play during their spring off season in order to stay involved and active in the school.
