With the help of a new librarian, Lacey White, Fair Grove Middle School and High School Book Club has officially started their club meetings.
Mrs. White stated, “I plan to try some new things with the High School Book Club this year along with getting ideas from the students involved.” A returning club member, Palin Lentz (9) adds, “We are really eager and excited to have Mrs. White as the new librarian and are waiting to hear her great ideas!” Last year, Kayla Holt and Samantha Orr, both 7th and 8th grade teachers, led the club. This year Mrs. White will be in charge and responsible for the club.
Mrs. White is a well known teacher and now a librarian for Fair Grove Middle and High School. She has taught in various grades mentioning, “This is my eighteenth year in education. I have taught 5th grade, 6th grade, and as a librarian Pre-K through Seniors.”
Mrs.White has always loved being in the library and helping students find new and creative books to read. With her new position she said, “I am able to share my love of books and reading with students. I am able to research and collaborate with other school librarians to find out what books are popular with middle school and high school students to best meet the needs and wants of our readers.”
Last year students who were involved in the Book Club could read the Mark Twain award nominees and the Truman award nominees. If they read four of them by spring they were able to vote on their favorite and attend a walking field trip to Kum & Go for slushies in the spring.
Mrs. White continued, “I try to read as many of these award nominees as I possibly can throughout the year along with some of the Gateway nominees that are geared toward high school students.”
Mrs. White said, “I have started to move around how some of the books are shelved and have some new ideas to organize and decorate to make the library a positive environment that makes finding texts easy that students will enjoy.”
Towards the end of second semester of last year, Lentz stated, “My favorite memory when I was in the Book Club was when we had a Christmas party and we exchanged gifts and brought food to share. This goes to show that Book Club isn’t just about reading books and competing. You also make new friends and make some fun memories.”
