There are multiple clubs within Fair Grove High School that focus on different areas of student interest, while connecting them with people with similar interests.
Cayse Overstreet, a marketing teacher at Fair Grove High School and FBLA/DECA (Future Business Leaders of America/Distributive Education Clubs of America) sponsor, said, “I think being involved in clubs and/or sports in school are extremely beneficial. The number one priority in school is education, but clubs and teams are where students connect and build life skills that are not always taught in the classroom.”
Overstreet also stated that most students don’t find school fun and that those that typically don’t find school fun are the people that just come to school are not involved or a part of any extracurriculars. She also stated that students who get involved in extracurricular activities find more fun and purpose in their high school career.
Joining a club might give you the opportunity to get to know different students that you might not normally interact with. It will also give you the chance to interact with teachers outside of the classroom.
Susanne Feldman, math teacher at Fair Grove High School and Chess Club Sponsor, said that she enjoys running her own club in the school. She also stated that it gives her a chance to talk to students that she doesn’t typically interact with and get to know more about the students she sees on a regular basis while seeing a different side of them.
Overstreet said, “I enjoy helping run FBLA/DECA. I miss coaching and making those connections with students outside of the classroom, but FBLA/DECA allows me to still build those bonds. I love seeing my students grow into leaders and accomplish things they never thought they could.”
Different clubs might have different goals that they wish to accomplish within their clubs. Feldman said, “Our goal is to teach people to play chess, and then use what we learn to be competitors at the local tournaments.”
Overstreet stated, “We are one of the largest clubs on campus and hope to continue to grow. We want more than just the ‘business-minded’ student to feel welcome in something great we have built at Fair Grove High School.”
Overstreet continued, “Most smart coaches know to put their best players on the court/field to win the game, our philosophy in FBLA/DECA is we win not just by competing with our best, but by those who challenge themselves to do something hard or out of their comfort zone, even if they don’t bring home a medal. That is a win for Mr. Sup and I!”
