Two students from Fair Grove have both committed to D1 colleges. Shea Skouby (12) will be attending MSU (Missouri State University) to play sand volleyball, while Brock Bruner (12) earned a full-ride scholarship to SEMO (Southeast Missouri University) for football.
According to Tonya Peck, the high school counselor and volleyball coach, Skouby had been reaching out to various colleges and coaches since last fall. Peck noted, “She had different interests and offers from both indoor and sand volleyball. She was able to narrow down her choices and ultimately decided to stay close to home and go to MSU for sand volleyball.”
“I am very excited about playing for MSU,” Skouby said. “It has such an incredible inviting environment!” After meeting the coaches and several of her new teammates, Skouby remarked on how helpful, welcoming, and kind they all were.
Bruner, on the other hand, has played football all four years of high school at Fair Grove. Jeremy Faubion, offensive coordinator and assistant coach for varsity football, described Bruner as a hard worker who gives his all to everything he is passionate about. “That is what makes him good in the weight room and as a football player,” Faubian stated.
Brock has verbally committed to SEMO and plans to sign his official letter of intent in December. He expressed his excitement about joining the SEMO football team, citing its past successes and the quality of the coaching staff. “I love them as people and leaders,” Brock said, “They strive to make you better men.” He plans to move into the dorms in June to start school and participate in summer workouts.
Both athletes have acknowledged the hard work that goes into the recruiting process. “Shea and Brock had to reach out to colleges, introduce themselves, and send stats and film,” Peck remarked. Peck explained that Bruner attended various college combines, a camp that highlights players and lets coaches see them in action, to showcase his skills, which helped him make the decision to commit to SEMO.
Peck expressed her pride in both students’ accomplishments. “I was beyond proud to hear about Shea’s decision to stay close and go to MSU. She has put in a lot of time to be a good volleyball player, and I love seeing that effort pay off! I am also proud of Brock; it’s always awesome to see a Fair Grove Eagle go on to impact the world around us.”
Skouby will be showcasing her skills at the next volleyball game on Thursday, October 3rd, at Clever, starting at 7 PM. Meanwhile, Bruner will take the field at the next football game on Friday, October 4th, at Springfield Catholic, also at 7 PM. Both athletes continue to represent Fair Grove High School with dedication and commitment as they prepare for their futures in college athletics.
