Fair Grove Middle School has introduced a new club known as the Mark Twain Club, and will be sponsored by Manda Hicks, a 5th grade teacher at Fair Grove.
Mark Twain club is a club for students 5th-6th grade that allows the students to express and share their interest in different books that they read over the year. As well as letting the students be involved with reading and interacting with one another. Mrs. Hicks will have the club meeting after school when available, and will be meeting in room 19 having their meetings from 3:30-4:30 pm.
As of right now the club will have no competitions with other schools, and will just be reading with one another.
Manda Hicks is a new ELA 5th grade teacher in the Middle School. She went to Missouri State University and got her masters and bachelors degree. Although Mrs. Hicks is a newly welcomed member of Fair Grove, she has been in education for 11 years, and has taught in various grades and schools. Mrs. Hicks mentioned, “I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th special education, and 5th grade.” Mrs. Hicks continued, “I have also worked at Greenfield elementary, El Dorado Springs Elementary, Shook Elementary, and Fair Grove Middle School.”
Although Mrs. Hicks wasn’t in any Mark Twain clubs; she has been in a few clubs outside of school. She really enjoys reading books and has read avidly this year, “I am an avid reader. I have read 96 books so far this calendar year in a wide variety of genres. I have only read two Mark Twain books this year, and my favorite from last year was ‘Six Feet Below Zero’ by Ena Jones.” Mrs. Hicks stated.
Since the club is new to the Fair Grove Middle School, Mrs. Hicks has some concerns as well as more ideas that will hopefully help the club grow and be successful. Mrs. Hicks has really been stepping up to make sure the club will fully succeed to the best of its ability. Mrs. Hicks mentioned, “We are going to read as many books as we can, make some posters to educate our peers on topics that come up in books, and create book trailers.” With the positive aspects and good ideas that Mrs. Hicks has thought of, there were also concerns that she had in mind, one that she had mentioned that she was not getting through all the books that she had planned for the year.
The next club meeting was October 31, after school from 3:30-4:30pm, and was be held in Mrs. Hicks’ room down in the Middle School in room 19.
