As fall comes to an end, the Fair Grove soccer and cross country teams’ seasons are coming to a close. Though their regular season is over, cross country ran in the state meet and soccer competed in the district tournament.
The Fair Grove soccer team, with an in-season record of 12-11 and won their first round of districts against Thomas Jefferson Independent with a score of 6-1. Their season ended in a close score game against Greenwood in the second round of districts. The final score was 0-1.
Their coach, Ryan Highstreet, commented, “The goal for this season was to get double digit wins.” Their win count last year was six, and Highstreet expressed their accomplishment of their goal with a regular season win count of 12.
The team has grown dramatically over the season, and are hopeful to build on their success in the off season and next year. They have four seniors graduating this year, leaving four open spots on the team. Overall, they have reached their in-season goals and worked hard throughout the season to succeed and improve.
The Cross Country team, coached by Jalen Supancic, has won many various top 3 finishes throughout their season. Both the Varsity girls and Varsity boys teams won the Fair Grove invitational meet, and have held a competitive edge throughout the season. Supancic notes, “This season has been a very successful season and our kids have improved consistently.”
Supancic added that their goals for districts were to qualify as teams and compete with some of the best runners in the state. The girls team placed 7th in districts. Elise Jackson (10) said, “I believe that this season went very well.” She added, “We all began working to get better during the season, and grew closer as a team.”
The boys team qualified for state as a team, and finished 4th in districts out of 15 teams. Katrina Cantwell (10), was the individual district champion, representing in Columbia at the State Cross Country Championships on November 9th, where the boys team will also compete.
Overall, both teams finished their seasons with improvements, now looking forward to offseason training. Jackson says, “I have extremely high hopes for the next season, especially with the new freshman coming in.” The Fair Grove soccer team had a close match in districts, and the Cross Country boys team and Cantwell competed in state on November 9th.
