Tuesday, October 7, the Fair Grove Elementary school hosted a Fire Safety demonstration for their students, in the spirit of fire safety week. The kids learned all about smoke alarms and how to deal with a fire emergency. They got to experience something that could help save their lives.

“Fires aren’t something we talk about daily,” says Charity Hollan, principle of the elementary school, “and as adults we know how to react but it’s important to teach the students.”

The Fair Grove Fire Department was in charge of coming out for the demonstration. They showed the kids all kinds of fire equipment like the smoke alarm and a fireman suit. Sparky the dog also made it out to aid the Fire Department in the presentation, and to entertain the kids.

“If a house is on fire, parents might not get to their children in time. It’s good that the kids could be self reliant on themselves,” states Greg Porter, police officer for Fair Grove. “It’s great that the fire department had time to come in and teach the kids.”

At the end of the demonstration, each student received a firefighter hat, and left with a better knowledge of fire safety.
