Even at a young age, Kellen Lair (12) had a natural athletic ability. Through hard work and perseverance he has made an impact on the Fair Grove High School football program by leading the team to the schools first ever state championship game.
Ryan Buffiington, Fair Grove Elementary Assistant Principal and offensive and defensive lines football coach shared, “Even during my time teaching him in elementary physical education, I recognized his remarkable talent. Since his freshman year, he has significantly impacted our football program.”
Lair has accumulated many accolades and awards for his achievements on the football field, including all state honors and Springfield News-Leader’s annual fan-voted Player of the Year Honor in 2023. Despite his many accomplishments, Lair takes it all in stride.
Dustin Lair, Kellen’s father, explained, “Kellen is weirdly humble, he doesn’t like people making a big fuss over him, but at the same time has complete confidence in his abilities.”
Buffington shared how Lair’s ability on the field is inspirational and motivating for the upcoming generation. “Kellen continues to astonish both coaches and teammates alike. There are moments on the football field that leave us all in awe, prompting laughter and admiration. He has inspired younger athletes with his achievements and accolades, extending influence beyond his teammates.”
Prior to the 2024 season, Lair stated, “One of my best plays was when we played the Central Bulldogs and I ran their man down before he scored a touchdown and I stripped the ball.”
Lair has a determination on the field and uses his competitiveness to his advantage. Lair’s mom, Stacy Lair, who teaches second grade at Fair Grove Elementary explained, “Kellen is quick, obviously. And SO competitive. But he is also sensitive, curious, and fun. He doesn’t hold grudges, even when I wish he would.”
Lair’s teammates look to his leadership and have a lot of confidence in him. Carson Trussel (11), one of Kellen’s teammates stated, “He really is a great athlete and brings a lot of things to the table.”
Buffington stated that Lair’s work ethic is extremely admirable and he competes hard in not only football, but in basketball and track as well. Lair also dedicated time and effort to building strength in the weight room which has helped him be successful in all the sports he plays.
Coaches and players appreciate the positive leadership Lair demonstrates on and off the field. Lair is currently in his senior year and has numerous college offers.
Buffington shared, “I am genuinely excited to see what the future holds for Kellen. He has the potential to achieve great things, regardless of where he decides to continue his football career. Kellen has not only developed into an outstanding football player, but also into a respectful and admirable young man. It has been a privilege to share the field with him over the past four years.”
