Each morning, Fair Grove students say their goodbyes to their parents before the day, but for some, the parents are coming along with them.
Alyssa Faubion (11) shared her experience as a student whose dad is a high school history teacher at Fair Grove. “Having a parent work at the school is definitely interesting. There’s different advantages and disadvantages, it really just depends on the day and what’s going on.”
Leigh Beller (10), daughter of Ms. Beller, takes the positive side, she commented, “One advantage is I know at least one English teacher in the school on a regular basis, so I can ask any questions about English I may have.”
Faubion added, “My whole life, it’s made it easy to talk to anybody.” Having a teacher being your parent at the school can definitely be a conversation starter, and some students say that this can even make them more comfortable around others because they know their parents.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to having a parent teaching at the school. Addison Voorhis (10), daughter of Coach Voorhis stated, “A disadvantage I would say would be that he always knows everything about my school life.”
While having a parent as a teacher can have its pros and cons, it also comes with a few speculations with fellow students. Voorhis adds, “Some people think things are given to me because I am a teacher’s kid. Especially with sports,” she continued on to say, “Sometimes it makes it harder for you.”
While there is a downside, many students with parents who work at schools say that, overall, it doesn’t affect their daily school routine dramatically. Faubion explained, “Overall, it doesn’t heavily affect the school day.”
While having a parent at school certainly has its pros and cons, overall, students say it is a mostly positive experience. “It’s really great,” Voorhis pointed out. Ultimately, having a parent at the school can shape a student’s experience in unique ways, but everyone has a balance between family and faculty.
