Homecoming is a dance that is put on by the Student Council (STUCO) at Fair Grove High School. The homecoming dance takes place directly after a football game, and this year the theme for the dance was “Royalty in Rio”.
Michael Van Cleave, the Fair Grove Geometry, Applied Algebra 2, and Computer Science teacher, sponsors STUCO and assists members of STUCO with the homecoming details.
Mr. Van Cleave stated, “We prepare for homecoming by planning the theme, the spirit days, a pep assembly, decorating for the dance, hiring a DJ for the dance, and electing a homecoming court. It’s a lot of work, but we love it!”
This year’s homecoming is a little different than last year’s, as it always is. Mr. Van Cleave said, “This year we focused on getting the spirit days figured out early so that we could spread the word and get more participation from the student body.”
The Fair Grove Homecoming football game was against Springfield Catholic. Following the football game, high school students filed into the courtyard at which homecoming took place.
STUCO provided capri suns for students attending the dance as well as the DJ.
The homecoming court this year was freshman princess Oliva Broyles, sophomore princess McKenna Zanzie, junior princess Kynlee Peck, and the senior homecoming queen was Leila Huff.
“Everyone should come to Homecoming! It’s a great way to make memories with your friends. Between the football game and the actual dance there are many opportunities to have fun and be involved,” Hannah Schwab (12) remarked.
Mr. Van Cleave said, “I like everything about Homecoming! I love the spirit week & dressing up, the assembly is always a lot of fun, the ceremony is beautiful (when we crown the queen), and I also love seeing all the alumni at the game.”
Brylee Mallard (11) stated, “Next year I am looking forward to seeing what we can come up with to make it even better and more organized.”
Preceding the homecoming football game against Springfield Catholic, at which Fair Grove lost 36-15, was the homecoming dance planned by STUCO.
