Fair Grove NHS Packages Food for the Hungry
December 10, 2014
Fair Grove NHS (National Honor Society), took a group this past weekend to Meals a Million, an organization in Springfield. What they did? Packaged food for starving people all over the world. This included El Salvador, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Mexico, Tanzania, the Philippines, and parts of the US. Meals a Million is volunteer ran, which means people donate their time to do something they’re not getting paid to do. Since NHS is all about volunteering, they jumped right on the opportunity to serve.
Emilie Armstrong, NHS member, explains how they packaged the food, “First you put in a vitamin packet, and then some dried veggies. After that is beans, some kind of soy mixture, and then rice.” She goes on to talk about Meals a Million, “My favorite part of the whole experience was getting to dance and sing and enjoy my time while helping the less fortunate.” Emilie was apart of the group from Fair Grove NHS who went and volunteered their time.
Friends Against Hunger, the company in charge of Meals a Million, was founded in Springfield during the December of 2007, and has been running ever since. Just a few years ago, in 2012, they were able to package 1,111,111 meals in just three days, with only the help of volunteers.
“It’s important to serve because it gives you an opportunity to reach out,” says Carolyn Hardin, another member of NHS. “There are activities in our community, but with Meals a Million, we got to help people around the world.”
Meals a Million 2014 packaged over a million meals November 14, 15, and 16. In just three days, they were able to help people all over the globe.
