Boys Take 2nd at the Clever Tournament
December 14, 2014
Boys varsity basketball team won 2nd place in the Clever Tournament that was held December 1st-6th. Coach Tim Brown discusses how the teams balance helped them immensely in their first game against Billings, “…We had balanced scoring and double figures.” That evening Garrett Kesterson (10) scored 16 points, Zayne McCurry (12) scored 14 points, Kyle Cavanaugh (11) scored 12 points, and Evan Fullerton (10) scored 10 points, with a final score of 72-28.
The boy’s second game was played on December 5th against Sparta. Coach Brown explains, “[The team] was able to grind it out. Some things didn’t go our way but we were able to tough it out and pull a win.”
The win was by a solid seven points, with a final score of 52-45. The top shooters were Cavanaugh with 18 points, G. Kesterson with 16 points, and McCurry with 14 points.
The championship game was played on December 6th against Hartville. After a hard fought game the Fair Grove team lost to Hartville. Coach Brown expressed that his hopes for the tournament had been that they would finish 1st seed and they would be able to seize the opportunity to become champions. Although, those goals were not achieved, he and the team found things they could take away from the loss to improve on their future game. “A lot of the problems we had been talking about, were exposed when we played Hartville, so hopefully we can learn from that [experience] and improve these things,” Coach Brown concluded.
Cavanaugh reveals that personally he will be, “Working on passing the ball better than I have and not dribbling so much, but rather looking to get other guys open.” as for the team as a whole, “Working the ball better, running the floor, and playing as one.”
Kesterson elaborates how the team will be improving through, “Hard work and playing together as a team…” he goes on to explain that, “…We have good individual players but we need to bring them together to play as a team.” Personally G. Kesterson will be working on his, “leadership role and trying to make sure people are where they are supposed to be.”
The HS boys team has nearly their whole season ahead of them, and their goals set high for the rest of the games.
