Grandparents Day Hit in the Elementary
October 21, 2015
Friday, September 18, the Fair Grove Elementary welcomed the many grandparents of their students into their doors. Throughout the day, grandparents gathered with their grandchildren to do several different activities about the elementary.
Charity Hollan, the principal of the Elementary school, talks about what she feels the purpose of grandparent’s day is, “It’s opening our doors to some of the most important people in our children’s lives and letting them catch a glimpse of their grandchild’s day. It’s the best day of the year for both.”
Since there were so many grandparents, the day was broken up into two groups. For the first half of the day, grandparents with a child in kindergarten, first grade, or second grade came and participated in the activities, and for the last half of the day, children in third or fourth grade had theirs visit.
“My favorite part is the grandparents,” says fourth grader Kolton Stevens, who has a speaking part in the program that was planned for the grandparents. The program was only one of many activities that the school had planned for the kids throughout the day. They also went to the book fair, and grandparents got pictures with their grandkids, as well as hung out with them in the classroom.
Some have so much fun during this special day, that they travel a huge distance to be with their grandchild. “We live in Bonne Terre, MO up near St. Louis, so we drove three hours. I would not miss it,” says grandparent Donna Bouchard. Bouchard has been participating in this day since her granddaughter Lauren was in Kindergarten, who is now 13. On Friday, she came to visit Lauren’s younger brother, Sam, who is 8.
The elementary ended up having more than 750 grandparents filter in and out of their doors on the 18th. For both the grandparents and the grandchildren, the day was fun packed, and a great way to spend time with each other.
