High School Sports’ managers are a vital part of any team, in any sport. They have a lot of responsibility, and if they make a mistake, they could get into a lot of trouble, even earn a foul for their own team.
The high school girls’ basketball team manager, Victoria Fishback, said, “My responsibilities are keeping track of rebounds, turnovers, fouls, and points.” Ty Lumley, the high school boys basketball team manager, added, “I take care of stats and get the guys hyped up before the clock starts ticking.”
“One of the good things about being team manager is that you get into all of the home and away games for free,” stated Victoria. Lumley said that he especially enjoys being manager because he gets to hang out with some really good guys and gets to be a part of an amazing program.” They both mentioned that being able to ride the bus provides them with a free ride to the game, which is really nice to have especially if the game is two hours away.
Both Victoria and Ty said that being the manager can sometimes be difficult. Victoria stated “Keeping up with everything when the game gets to moving fast can sometimes be a chore and you have to be careful not to make any mistakes. So you had better be paying attention, you don’t want to mess up the game.” Ty added “Sometimes it’s hard not to slip up and talk trash on the other team, it’s even harder not to do so when you can hear them talking trash on your own team.”
Playing the role of a team manager may not be the easiest thing in the world, but it definitely has its benefits, whether that being free entry to games, or just wanting to be a part of a growing program. No matter what their reason is, they definitely fill a large role on the team.
