Calculating Competitions

Fair Grove math team members win the first place division.

Fair Grove High School math kids attended their first math competition in Camdenton on Saturday January 16th. Students left at 6:45 am to arrive at the competition that began at 8 am. Students from 9th to 12th grade attended this competition to compete in categories like algebra and calculus.   

Fair Grove had a successful day at this competition. Bryce Bettis (12) comments, “I feel it went very well. Our school got first in our division.”  Fair Grove placed in Division II with 232 points, which was 70 points above the second place school. Each of the Fair Grove teams placed with 9th grade team placing 4th, the 10th grade team placing 7th, the 11th grade team placing 1st, the 12th grade team placing 1st, and the mixed math team placing 1st.  

Many students who compete are those who enjoy or do well in their math class. Bettis states, “I competed because I like math and it’s fun to see if I can do it and how well I do.” Bettis placed in many categories, and was one student who received at least on 1st place ribbon. other students also competed individually in different categories. The following students received one or more 1st place ribbons: Cooper Garton (9), Jane Ellison (9), Sierra Anderjaska (10), Colton Dame (10), and Mickie Roberts (10).  Other students who placed 5th place or higher are as follows: Jordan Van Nostrand (9), Nolan Houston (9), Adriana Hammons (10), Austen Rector (11), Carter Crews (11), Emily Jones (11), Mark Cockroft (10), Elijah Stafford (11), Emily Derrick (12), Bryce Bettis (12), and Joe Caudle (12).

The next competition will be March 23rd at Skyline, and the final competition will be April 6th at College of the Ozarks. Bettis says, “I expect to do well again next competition. I also hope more people go and that we have a good time.”
