Free College: The Possibility

Blake Tettleton

Should secondary education be free? This question is at the forefront of the minds of many Americans, especially those entering the world of tuition fees. Most people who disagree with the idea of college being free stand against it mainly due to the idea that the higher taxes that would come from it wouldn’t aide them, or they believe that since they suffered through college and now have a cloud of student loan debts hanging over their heads, future generations should have to destroy their lives economically as well. The extreme selfishness that comes from these arguments is enough to almost entirely discredit the idea on its own.

College not being free targets lower class families. Many children who grow up in a home with no money might not be able to attend college, even though a majority of careers today require secondary education. Nobody should have to forfeit a bright future and their own happiness because of the massive debt that comes along with college. The crippling debt that comes with using student loans to pay for college can weigh heavily on the lives of those who have graduated and have to start paying back the massive amount of money they own.

For those who disagree with the idea of college being free, they only need to look at countries such as Germany who have free college and their workforce is highly successful and efficient. The idea that the taxes that would come with making college free is also another good example as to why people should look to countries such as Germany, as even though the taxes there are high, the citizens are much happier and less stressed than if they had a cloud of debt hanging over their heads.

The pros of free college easily outweigh the cons, as the amount of stress and time that debt can take up can drive many people into actual depression. Also, seeing as how a college degree is required for many careers, people shouldn’t have to place themselves into a permanent amount of debt just to be able to make a living for themselves.
