2016 Election Wrap-up

Blake Tettleton

On Tuesday, November 8th, Americans all over the country went to the polls to decide who would be their next president of the United States. As you will surely already know by the time you read this, Donald Trump won. The Republican nominee, a native of New York, won a stunning victory over Hillary Clinton, even when polls all across the nation predicted a win by the Democrat nominee.
One reason that Trump’s victory was so stunning was that the Clinton had every advantage possible. She rules a political empire, has more experience at the job, had the support of most minority groups in America and most of America’s female vote, had the support of the mainstream media outlets except Fox, and had a husband who has previously held the office. Trump didn’t even have the support of Fox until after he won the primary. This is why his win was shocking to not only America, but countries across the globe.
Hillary Clinton came in with 64,156,255 popular votes, leading Donald Trump who had 62,238,425. Trump won the election by bringing in 290 electoral votes, while Clinton only managed 232. In his victory speech delivered shortly after 3 a.m. on November 9th, Trump stated that “Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time and we owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to our country.” Trump took to the stage to accept his win only minutes after Clinton had called him to concede.
For his cabinet, Trump’s intended nominees are: Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General, Kansas Reprsentative Mike Pompeo for CIA Director, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley for Ambassador to the UN, Activist Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary, and Lt. General Mike Flynn as his National Security Adviser. Trump has been highly criticized for his choices, and only time will tell if this criticism has value.
