Middle Schoolers Put Their Minds to the Test
November 13, 2017
Trivia can be a quality, and useful skill to excel at. It improves your knowledge and your comprehending. The Middle School Scholar Bowl Team exceeds at this. They practice every Thursday from after school till 4:30. They set up buzzers and practice as if it were a real competition. The questions cover every subject you could think of, everything from math to science to literature to random facts about TV shows. Chanda Lemon, the coach of the team, says, “We have about 10 students that attend practice. I am only taking 5 students to the first competition. I have quite a few new members this year. Braden Booth is a 6th graders and Christian Allen is a 7th grader who are both new to the team – but they are great at building points for their respective categories. Thomas Ferguson is a strong 8th grade competitor as well.”
Last Saturday, on November 4, they had their first competition at Marionville. There was a random drawing to see what schools would compete against who. They had to go against 4 other schools in separate rounds. Each round consisted of 20 toss up questions. If a toss up question is answer correctly, the team that answered will get two bonus questions. If the bonus is answered wrong, the other team will get a chance to steal. Each correctly answered question is worth 10 points. They went up against Marionville, Reed Springs, Clever Team A and Clever Team B. Mrs. Lemon stated, “We won 1st place this weekend at the Marionville tournament. Team members: Braden Booth, Christian Allen, Luc Deeds, Hanne Ghanem, & Abigail Gilmartin. It was their first time to participate in a tournament & they did a great job.”
The team has another competition on December 2 along with the High School. They focus hard on improving their knowledge and learning more facts that might come up in competition. They faced some formidable schools and came out victorious but they will keep on practicing to become better at their trade.
