Back on February 14, 496 A.D., the first Valentine’s Day was celebrated. It is an old tradition thought to have originated from an ancient  Roman pagan festival called Lupercalia. This day is generally known has a day of love and compassion, but to the kids in the Fair Grove Elementary, it is a day of fun and parties.

They Elementary kids celebrate Valentine’s Day by having parties with food and games at the end of the day.  They start around 2:00-2:15. Mrs. Hollan, the Elementary principal, commented, “Our Valentine Parties have been a long standing tradition. Students decorate boxes and make valentines for their classmates. Classroom volunteers plan snacks and an activity. Parents are welcome to join, and many do.”  This is a time where the kids can take a break from normal school to relax and have fun.

The parties are chaperone by the teacher of each classroom and the many parent that come in.  Mrs. Cribbs, a first grade teacher, says, “The elementary welcomes all parents to come in for the parties at the end of the day.  Many children get deliveries from loved ones during the day (the kids are really excited if they get something and love to walk by the office and entry way to see balloons, flowers, etc.)”

Mrs. Cribbs also replied, “During the day most teachers make learning fun by incorporating a valentine activity into reading, writing, and math (kids may be able to write using candy valentine hearts, graph with candy hearts or make a valentine for a loved one).  Kids are so very excited for Valentine’s day. It is one of their very favorite days of the year. They each usually bring in a “mailbox” that they have created at home with the help of parents or family members. They each have a valentine for every person in their class.  The kids love to pass out their valentines to their friends.” Valentine’s Day is a day where happiness is all around, crushes are made, relationships grow, friendships are built on and when love is in the air.
