Behind the Scenes of Dancing and Fun
April 13, 2018
The middle school held a dance on Thursday, April 12th at 5:30pm in the FEMA. The dance was a Retro theme with throwbacks to multiple decades. Character Council Sponsor, Mrs. Shawnda Minor, organised the dance along with her Character Council students. The dance was set up to be more of a ‘social gathering’ rather than the stereotypical dance set up.
There were 4 small areas set up in the FEMA. The first being a place to dance. Another being for food and the other two were set up for games. There was a DJ, lights and retro decorations. Some decorations being related to pac man, records and cassette tapes.
The Middle School Character Council come up with and help with all the dances at the middle school. Minor said, “We take a couple weeks to prepare for the dance.” In the beginning they think of theme ideas and then they begin to plan specifics. After scheduling the dance they purchase necessary items, make decorations to fit the theme and bring as many supplies as possible. Minor explained, “After we have a plan/schedule in place we purchase food items, make decorations, and bring in extra supplies.”
Several of the Character Council members stayed after school to help prepare and plan for this event. They also had the help of Ms. Gilpin and her art club. They helped with the making and design of some of the decorations used at the dance.
On the day of the dance, several students involved in Character Council stayed after school. The members split into groups and set up the 5th and 6th grade bash during their 7th hour, which was held before the dance. Minor stated, “On the day of the dance, the Character Council members break into groups and set up the entire bash during 7th hour.” She then added, “They are a hard working group of kids, and do an amazing job pulling it all together.”
