Scouting for Success

Ryan Odom

The Girl Scouts have been around for over 106 years and the Fair grove Elementary is proud to have it as a program in their community.  It is a gigantic organization with over two million girls in over 92 countries worldwide. They learn skills that help themselves survive and how to help community and earn badges of merit for it like camping outside or assisting the elderly.  The Girl Scouts program was founded by a revolutionary women in 1912, Juliette Gordon Low. She was a leader and one of the biggest female influences in the 1900s. Low said, “Badges mean nothing in themselves, but they mark a certain achievement and they are a link between the rich and the poor. For when one girl sees a badge on a sister Scout’s arm, if that girl has won the same badge, it at once awakens an interest and sympathy between them.”

Low had many ideas and thoughts that she expressed at meetings, rallies, and protests.  She was considered to be up there with the great speakers and leaders of her time like Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi.  Low stated, “We must accept the fact that transport and communications will bring the world in close relations and the youth of the world should have standards and ideals in common. The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.”

One of the members of the Fair Grove Elementary Girl Scouts is Destiny Bridges.  Destiny is a fourth grader in Mrs. Francis’ class. She loves the girl scouts and has been doing for as long as she has been eligible.  Destiny said, “My favorite part is being with my friends.” She also stated that the reason she decided to join the Girl Scouts is because she really likes to meet new people and grow the relationships with the people she already knows.  The Fair Grove Girl Scouts meet after school every Tuesday in the Elementary Cafeteria.
