Running with the Top Dogs
March 7, 2019
Most people would admit running isn’t their favorite thing to do but for the Fair Grove Girls Track Team it’s what they love doing. Everyday after school from 3:15 to 4:30 the girls will work on improving and perfecting their different skills, whether it is jumping hurdles, throwing shot put, practicing relays, etc. Lindsay Martin, head coach of the Girls Track Team, said, “Every year our goal is simple; we want to improve our times/marks every meet, even if it’s just a little bit, so we can be peaking at the right time in the season (Districts and beyond).”
In the off-season most of the girls can be found playing basketball for the Fair Grove Girls Basketball Team or participating in other off-season sports to keep them fit and in-shape which helps give them a leg up while competing. The girls have big goals for beating Fair Grove’s well known rival Strafford. “In our relays and of course at the conference and District meets we always want to destroy Strafford,” exclaimed Coach Martin.
With a strong group of Juniors returning healthy and ready to compete plus adding in some new highly motivated girls Coach Martin looks forward to seeing how the girls compete in their track meets.
For the girls, there are several fun and exciting meets on the schedule to look forward to. “The Willard and SBU meets are always fun because we get the opportunity to compete against some larger schools and a wider range of schools across the area,” said Coach Martin.
By competing against larger schools it helps to show the girls where they need to improve but also shows what skills they are truly proficient at. With their first meet approaching quickly the girls work hard and give it their all in practice to help them prepare for their first meet.
Their first meet will be Thursday March 21 at Stockton at 3:30 pm, followed by a meet on Tuesday March 26 at Logan Rogersville at 3:45 pm.
