Driving into Sectionals
May 7, 2019
This year Fair Grove High School has made it past Districts in many sports like, Boys Soccer and Cross Country but now, Golf has joined the list. Districts were held on April 29th. The team of nine people got narrowed to only two advancing on to sectionals. Those two athletes were Shain Lahey (12) and Gaven Peterie (11).
The Golf team is coached by Bryan Tucker, who commented, “Gaven Peterie and Shain Lahey both qualified for sectionals. Gaven won the conference tournament last week at rivercut shooting an 82. Gaven and Shain have both shot rounds in the 70’s this year. We hope to see both of them qualify for state.”
Since Fair Grove doesn’t have a golf course, the team must travel to the course in Buffalo to practice, making attending them a real commitment. They practice after a few days week by working on driving, middle distance game, and putting to cover all aspects of golf. A low score is ideal, points are scored based on how many times you hit the ball before you get it in the hole. You want to do this in as few as possible.
Gavin Peterie stated, “I did decent at this year’s districts shooting a 91. It’s a little disappointing score but I still made it through to sectionals, placing 6th overall. To prepare for districts I have a schedule of getting up at 6:25 every morning and doing mobility work. Second after school I go to golf practice and hit range, chip, putt, and normally play nine holes for the end.”
Districts was a hard course, but Sectionals will be even more tough with more hills and traps. Gavin commented, “I believe sectionals will go fine and that me and Shain will play to the best of our abilities. Learning from this years districts, we will work on not getting angry and focusing on the process of each shot to give ourselves the best possible outcomes.”
Sectionals will be held Versailles, MO on May 18th at Rolling Hills Country Club early in the morning.
