Adventure is Out There! Destination #2 : The Haunted Maze

Boxer Jocks, an attraction at the Haunted Maze.

Emma Schlak

If you’re back for round two, I hope you’ll find an adventure that appeals to you! This past weekend I went on a new adventure to a place that I had already been. Your destination doesn’t always have to be new, sometimes we are a different person visiting the same place. Please remember that your adventure is more than just where you are, it’s also what you do. The journey that friends and I embarked on was to the Aurora Haunted Corn Maze.

The Aurora Corn Maze is of course a corn maze, but it also has many other attractions. I attended the corn maze as a kid and had enjoyed all of the age appropriate attractions with my siblings. The maze has a courtyard attraction area (or Kid Zone) with games, a hayride, a Jumping Pillow, a pair of Boxer Jocks, a Twin Spin, a Rat Roller, a Mechanical Bull, a corn box, some farm animals, movies, a Cow Train, and more. They also have a Zombie Paintball Shoot Out and Fire Pits that you can rent to toast your own marshmallows (come prepared!) and hang out with your group.

The maze is 5 acres and split into two separate halves. Throughout the maze there are scare actors strategically placed to frighten you. Before you go into the maze however, there will be a maze attendant who will give you a quick rundown of all that is going on in the maze and the rules of the maze to ensure nothing goes wrong. In addition to the people meant to scare you, there will also be other visiting parties in the maze and employees to help you navigate the maze. After completion of the first half of the corn maze, you will be asked if you would like to continue or if you want to stop there. You are able to complete the entire maze in one visit, but as it is a large maze, if you do choose to stop at the midway point, you can come back any other day that they are open and either complete the second half, or navigate the first half again.

The Zombie Harvest Paintball Shoot Out is on Fridays or Saturdays, starting at dusk.  The cost for a wristband, which Includes 100 paintballs, is $10; to buy an extra 50 rounds it would be $5.

To get into the maze or to gain access to the attractions, you must purchase a wristband or tickets. A maze and courtyard passes will cost $10, for just the courtyard pass it is $8. You can purchase a Zombie Harvest Pass which is $10, or the Maze/Zombie Harvest Combo on Friday or Saturday which includes admittance to the maze as well as unlimited courtyard activities (Zombie Harvest starts at dusk) it is $18.

To fully complete your experience at the Aurora Corn Maze, you are able rent a bonfire site. The cost is $10 an hour. This includes getting the fire started for you, providing wood and roasting sticks (if you need them), however you must make reservations to acquire a site.

The Aurora Corn Mazes’ hours are from 5 pm to 8:30 pm on Wednesdays, 5pm to 10pm on Fridays, and on Saturdays they are open from 3 pm to 10 pm. They are open till Saturday, October 31. From the High School building it would take roughly an hour so you would again need to plan your visit accordingly. You can visit their website: https://auroramaize.com/ , where you can access more information, including attraction details and a menu..

An adventure doesn’t always have to be extravagant. It can be as big as a cruise or as little as a trip to your local thrift shop. Often, like my experience on this adventure, perspective can make a previous adventure feel new again!  Try new things! And if that isn’t a possibility for you currently, try old things with a new perspective (or even new companions!) and see what the world holds! Adventure is out there!
