Fair Grove High School participated in a Spirit Week for Dr. Hollan September 26 – 29 in order to support Dr. Hollan and her family during her fight with pancreatic cancer.
STUCO and FBLA / DECA joined forces in order to come up with a Spirit Week for both Homecoming and PowderPuff. Casey Overstreet, a teacher at Fair Grove High School as well as the FBLA / DECA supervisor, spoke on the Spirit Week saying, “Our FBLA / DECA chapter loves to keep our service projects close to home and when one of our own is in need we want to do all we can do to support our FG family!”
Micheal Van Cleave, a geometry teacher at Fair Grove High School, said, “Mrs. Overstreet reached out to Mrs. Feldman and I with the idea to team up and match the Powderpuff theme with our Hoco spirit week, and theme the whole thing around supporting Dr. Hollan. We loved the idea and ran with it!”
FBLA / DECA and STUCO came up with several different and unique ways to not only show school spirit, but support and encouragement as well for the Hollan family.
September 26th was “Sock It To Cancer Tuesday” where students wore their favorite crazy socks. This was followed by “Team Hollan Wednesday” in which everyone wore their team jerseys or PowderPuff shirts. Thursday, September 28th was “Hats For Hollan” were students and faculty paid a dollar or more in order to wear a hat in support of Dr. Hollan. Friday, the last day of the Spirit Week, was “White Out To Wipe Out Pancreatic Cancer”. In addition to the Homecoming theme, students wore all white with a purple ribbon in order to stand up to pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Van Cleave spoke about additional fundraisers that would go towards helping Dr. Hollan such as “Honks for Hollan” where a dollar was donated for every honk as people pulled into the parking lot for the game.
Mr. Van Cleave said, “Money raised will be given to the Hollan family to support expenses associated with Dr. Hollan’s courageous fight against pancreatic cancer… Our goal is to raise as much money as possible.”
The Spirit Week this year combined support for not only Homecoming and PowderPuff, but Dr. Hollan as well. Mrs. Overstreet shared, “There is power in numbers. We have seen our community step up big in times like this and we are confident they will do it again!”
