Fair Grove Volleyball is more than just their varsity team, their junior varsity team is always putting in the work to prepare for the seasons to come.
Even though varsity and junior varsity are separate, there are a lot of similarities. Hannah Schwab (10) talked through the JV and Varsity practices, “A normal practice looks like working on skills, fundamentals, and stuff that we didn’t do so great on in a game. We don’t do a lot of things different from varsity unless it is rotation work.”
Another thing that many of the junior varsity and varsity players have in common is their love for the sport. “My favorite part about playing volleyball is team bonding. I love being able to play the sport that I love with some of my best friends,” said Sofee Garrett (10). Schwab and Addyson Nunley (10) also had similar reasons for loving the sport of volleyball.
Garrett is one of the few JV players that also gets to play varsity. While this is an honor that many of the athletes hope for, it is still an extra challenge to take on. Garrett elaborated on her experience while playing for both teams, “It’s definitely challenging to be on both teams because you get very tired and always have a long night. But it’s also very fun and you always feel included even if you do sit on the bench.”
The JV team has faced some struggles this season, Nunley explained, “The JV’s team goals are more communication and faster reactions. We’re trying to better connect as a team and more communication could also fix our problem of slow reaction time.”
They have a plan to fix this main problem though, “We’re trying to talk more while the ball is on our side and the other side of the net so that we can react to balls faster and have better passes to run a better offense,” continued Nunley.
Some more numerical goals, that are on and off of the court, were explained by Garrett, “One JV team goal was to have a 3.5 gpa or higher in school. We also set goals for Benergey (Bench energy), 9/10 serving percentage, and communication on court.”
Junior Varsity has one more home game on October 10th to finish out their regular season, the varsity team will then continue on to districts.
