As the seniors graduate, a new grade shifts into Fair Grove High School. Freshmen take the role of underclassman, and experience this new part of their lives.
Aydan McClinton (9) part of the new freshmen class said, “Everything is new and exciting. I love being able to have a little bit more freedom in classes. I also love being able to meet more people in higher grades.”
For many students sports are a prevalent part of the American high school experience. Kolton Klindworth (9), a football, baseball, track and basketball player said, “I am excited about sports for the next four years.” Addison Voorhis (9), a softball player enthused, “ I am excited to start playing for the school and wearing that purple uniform.”
Extracurricular activities are also a big part of high school, McClinton explained, “I’m very excited for all the new clubs that have opened up to me. I’m so stoked to be able to get involved in more things and meet more people.” Ryanne Crutcher (9) agreed, “My favorite part of high school so far is being able to have more classes with a variety of people and being more involved.”
High school also brings more freedom to students. Aubrie Voorhis (9) stated, “I definitely love all my teachers and how I get to pick my classes and what hour they are!” This shift from middle school to high school allows students to make more decisions about their future on their own.
The transition from middle school to high school is an important and tumultuous time. The expectations become higher, the involvement becomes more demanding, grading becomes harder, and the workload becomes larger.
Joseph Florez, the freshman English teacher at Fair Grove, voiced, “Freshman year is a big reality check for some students, but in a good way. High School is supposed to be harder than Middle School, right? Every year should be a step up, slightly higher expectations each year, and I think that’s the case for many students in English I.”
Addison Voorhis agrees, “My least favorite part is the amount of homework. Though it isn’t a ton of work like I was expecting, it is much more than middle school had.” Grayson Muncy (9) said, “There are a lot more rules and teachers are more strict about behaviors, phones, grades, etc.”
Crutcher is looking towards the future and shared, “I am excited to go on college visits.” Abigail Peak (9) is excited to follow her interests in higher education. Kynlee Peck (9) said that she is excited for fun classes throughout the next four years, and for the sports she will be a part of. Brennyn Smith (9) added, “I am really excited to meet a lot of new people in my next four years of high school.”
