Fair Grove’s Elementary Grandparent’s Day was on October 5th, 2023. Grandparent’s day is a day for elementary student’s grandparents to come to school and spend quality time with grandkids.
Michelle Graves, elementary school teacher believes that, ” . . . Grandparent’s day helps to bridge the generational gap between grandchildren and their grandparents. Our students get to share part of their day with their extended family members.”
On Grandparent’s Day, from 9a.m. to 10a.m., preschool through first grade grandparent’s flood the building to see their grandkids perform in a music program planned specially for them. From 1a.m. to 3a.m. second through fourth grade grandparent’s come to support their grandkids in this program.
At the end of each music program grandparent’s and their grandchildren are escorted to the classrooms and grandparents are gifted with a craft made with special care for them by their grandkids.
“Our administrators and music teachers put in a lot of effort to pull this off,” Mrs. Graves complemented. Victoria Glenn, third grade teacher for Fair Grove Elementary, agreed, “There is a tremendous amount of work done to organize Grandparent’s Day by our administration and staff. Everyone is involved. The kitchen bakes the cookies the older students deliver to each classroom, the custodial and maintenance staff make sure that everything looks extra nice and put extra effort into cleaning and preparing for the day.”
Ms. Glenn continued, “The teachers organize extra activities and manage permission slips and activities for the students who do not have a grandparent coming. Administration organizes all the details of parking, scheduling, and organizing all the small details.”
Charity Hollan, Fair Grove Elementary Principal explained how she sees it, saying, “Grandparent’s Day is an opportunity to allow our grandparents to experience their grandchild’s educational setting. It is a great way to build community.”
“It is such a joy to host grandparents and it all comes together smoothly,” Dr. Hollan communicated, “The students are so excited to have their grandparents join them at school. It is a heartfelt day for all.”
“Grandparent’s Day makes the students so excited, and even the students who are adopted get so excited to have their people show up for them. One little kiddo who has been adopted said to me just this morning, “Ms. Glenn, this is my absolute favorite day of the year. I LOVE Grandparent’s Day,” Ms. Glenn stated.
“I’m already looking forward to welcoming the grandparents back again next year!” Mariah Pilkinton, preschool teacher for Fair Grove Elementary, exclaimed.
