Senior students of Fair Grove are faced with many big decisions soon after graduation such as if they want to go to college or not and if so where.
Fair Grove High School supplies many resources to help students make their decisions. Although it is not expected that students know exactly what they want to do, looking at options and having resources to make it easier always helps.
“Some of these things include the OTC field trip during sophomore year, we have also started the college and career fair in the spring. Another opportunity to help guide students is having college reps visit during advisory and throughout the school year and have military reps that visit during lunch throughout the year. Juniors and Seniors are also allowed college visit days,” stated Mrs. Tonya Peck, a high school counselor at Fair Grove.
These opportunities help students explore many of their options after high school. These help anywhere from finding a local college to go to, learning different trades and military options, and hearing from large job branches in surrounding areas.
Here at Fair Grove, keeping an open mind can be very important when it comes to what happens after graduation, not everyone has a plan by the time it’s all said and done but Stephanie Dunham (12) does.
Dunham stated, “After graduation I plan to keep working and hopefully start an internship at TPC Payroll Company. Then in the fall I plan to attend Evangel University.” She plans on attending Evangel University to eventually become a therapist and still work within her church.
Stephanie also expressed one of the reasons she is not stressed about graduating in a few months is because she has a basic plan in place. Although it is very helpful to have a plan before graduation, it is far from necessary and it is up to every individual student to figure out what they want to do with their future. Fair Grove High School does as much as possible to make it simple and easy for students as they can.
College is not for everyone, there are many other options such as trade school, the military, going straight into a job, taking a gap year and many more. Students are guided through high school to help them figure out what they believe will work best for them.
As far as college Fair Grove also offers many local and non-local scholarships. Fair Grove holds a rewards ceremony where many of these scholarships are given away. Scholarships are a great way for students that do decide to go to college to get a head start.
Juniors and seniors are welcome in Mrs. Peck’s office anytime to schedule a college visit. The Career Fair will also be held in the spring and OTC field trips for sophomores happen at the beginning of each year according to Mrs. Peck.
