Every Thursday from 5 – 8 p.m, a holiday tour commenced in the heart of Fair Grove. The Wommack Mill, more commonly known around Fair Grove as The Mill, hosted a special tour open to the public until December 21.
The Wommack Mill is the oldest standing structure in town. Built in 1883, it is the center of the community with its location being on Main Street. The Mill is always partaking in special events, especially in the fall and winter. The Historic site is a backdrop for festivals, reunions, meetings, and tours.
The tours that commenced every Thursday, opened a new door to the history of the Wommack Mill and its purpose throughout the years. This tour allowed the community to know the roots of Fair Grove, and the history of the past communities. The Mill had multiple purposes and countless stories to go along with it.
Cindy Sparks, the Fair Grove Elementary Singing Eagles director, described how her class appreciates the Wommack Mill during the holidays. “It’s always exciting when the Singing Eagles sing at the Mill at Christmas. There is so much going on and it’s like a town party. It is one of our favorite events. The Mill is the focal point of our town because of its history.”
Amy Johnson, a social studies teacher at Fair Grove High School, shared her own personal history with the Mill. “The Mill is a historical landmark that represents the establishment of Fair Grove. It is recognizable by everyone that lives here and by many that visit. Fun fact, I got married on the front porch of the Mill.”
The Mill is a staple for the younger generation as well. Fair Grove High seniors take senior photos, and students take prom, courtwarming, and homecoming pictures there as well.
Cindy Hill, Fair Grove’s local photographer for athletics, and much more, stated her experience with The Mill. “I love taking pictures there, there are so many cool options and spots for photos. It’s a unique, and very vintage spot with great country vibes for my style and my clients.”
Hill added, “The Mill is keeping our small town heritage alive, and that is very important to keep that part of our history going.”
The Wommack Mill stands very proudly, especially during this time of year, with white glorious lights to light up the building for the holidays. The tours that linger in December remind the Fair Grove Community to be prideful of their heritage, and more knowledgeable about the history around them.
