As the 2023-2024 school year comes to an end, Fair Grove High School Seniors are preparing for college by traveling, touring, and experiencing college life.
Many students have started the lookout for possible college fits locally and out of state. While some students are having a difficult time finding their fit, some knew from day one. Stephanie Dunham (12) said, “I was pretty dead set on going to UMKC (University of Missouri – Kansas City) before my visit/ tour with them. Overall what really sold me on going to this school was how nice the dorms were along with how inclusive the entire campus is and how lighthearted the vibe of the campus was.”
While some students travel far and wide to attend their dream college, some choose to stay close to home. Seth Hardison (12) said, “I plan to attend Missouri State University (MSU). I plan to receive a degree in Child Development with a focus on Family Studies. While visiting MSU, the people around me and the location persuaded me to attend their school.”
Some students may not see the value in touring yet another school, but Charlie Hungerford, Evangel University Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment said, “Before committing to a college or university, I believe it is important for a student to visit that campus if at all possible. It is during that final visit to the campus where the student can solidify the emotional aspects and be comfortable with answers to questions that surround the college search.”
Hungerford continued on why it’s important to find your fit and how the visits could sway your vote by saying, “As students begin the college search and selection process, visiting a variety of university types is also helpful in determining what kinds of schools they should ultimately consider in their applications for admission.”
By visiting many different colleges or universities it can provide good insight on future careers. It can show if you are more interested in attending a small private university, a mid-sized private or public university, or a large state university. Having an informative and detailed tour can bring out what you may or may not be looking for in a college or university.
Students may have a difficult time finding time to visit colleges and universities because of school. Fortunately, Fair Grove High School offered a Career and College Exploration Day on March 27, 2024 to give students the opportunity to miss school hours to plan, prepare, and search for their future after high school.
