School lunch is a great way for schools to provide students with different eating options. Fair Grove High School applies its own culture to school lunches to encourage students to look forward to lunch everyday.
Not only does Fair Grove have separate lunch options, they offer a variety of snacks afterwards, calling the area Snack Shack. This allows students to buy concession drinks, snacks, and even ice cream to enjoy at lunch. Students also bring their lunch instead of purchasing a school’s lunch.
Shea Skouby (11) explained, “I get school lunch because it looks really good and sometimes I just need a bigger meal throughout the week before practices. I also can get very lazy making my lunch, so the school lunch is just overall sometimes an ideal choice for everyone.”
Kaydence Kane (11) explained her lunch habits by stating, “I personally like bringing my lunch to school because I know all the ingredients in everything. I pre-make it so it’s something I like and I don’t have to wait in a super long line. I think more people get breakfast than lunch because the kids that bring their lunch are getting breakfast in the mornings.”
Friday breakfast, biscuits and gravy, is a popular food choice for all students who wake up early enough to get it. This specific breakfast is widely known as the students favorite breakfast and is always served on Fridays.
At lunch, Fair Grove has adopted a new line system to speed up the process for everyone to receive food. Kane continued, “The lunch ladies are doing an amazing job keeping up with the new lunch system, and making sure everyone gets their food and has time to eat. It gets very loud and a little overwhelming at first, but I’ve gotten used to it.”
Another different system the school has adopted is combining two high school lunches into one big lunch session. This speeds up the lunch process, but it does have the entire high school into one lunch. Kane expressed, “I like this system better than the two separate lunches though because you get to sit with all of your friends rather than getting split between lunches.”
Skouby stated, “I think school lunches are important for the community because it offers kids who don’t have food resources at home a place to be able to be fed. That meaning really resonates with me and gives me a sense of pride for my school.”
School lunch could be interpreted as a simple school aspect, but it also could be seen as a helpful hand to the community’s students and highlights the school’s hard working staff. This shows Fair Grove’s hand in the school and community when it comes to serving a meal each day.
