As the 2023-2024 school year comes to an end, marching band leadership positions have already been assigned for next year by Band Director, Natalie Palomo.
Leadership is a crucial part of making the high school band run smoothly, especially during marching season. Leaders are expected to participate fully, keep up morale among the group, and give their full effort to everything they do.
Collin Emery (11), a future co-leader of the saxophone section, elaborated on being a leader. Collin said, “We have to make sure that our section is on task during practice and make sure everyone is up to the standards of the band. During marching season is when section leaders have the most responsibilities.”
In order to become a leader in band, students who are applying must go through an interview process. Much like a job interview, students are asked to get recommendations and go through a sit-down interview. Questions include individual personal opinions about their musical and marching abilities, and questions about your morale.
Next year there will be two drum majors to direct the band during marching season; Carson Krider (11) and Lucas Engel (11). The job of a drum major entails being a strong leader, and keeping a consistent tempo while conducting. Engel looks forward to his senior band season, moreover, he said, “I am very excited to be a drum major with my long time best friend Carson Krider for our senior year.”
Upcoming leaders are looking forward to next year, including current freshman Aydan McClinton (9). She said, “I’m really excited for the travelling. Going to different places to compete is one of my favorite parts of marching band.”
Flute section leader, Riley Frazier (11), also added, “I’m looking forward to band camp and marching season.”
During marching season, the band is also tasked with performing their show at football games and playing pep songs in the bleachers. Playing at football games is a good way for students in the band to get more familiar with their show, and to prepare them for marching competitions in the future.
Along with playing and preparing for competitions, being in band is a good way to meet new people and make new memories. McClinton said, “Last year so many good memories were made on the field and in the stands, and it will always be a highlight of the season for me. I loved playing with the band in the stands and doing the chant. It really makes me feel included in something that’s a happy part of my life.”
Ayden Teaster (12) was one of the drum majors for the 2023 marching season. Teaster gave advice to upcoming leaders, and said, “…make sure that you are doing whatever you can to make everyone around you better. It’s not about being a good individual, it’s about building up people around you.”
As the school year comes to an end, the Fair Grove Marching Band along with the band leadership is preparing for their future 2024 marching season.
