Throughout Fair Grove Athletics, many programs have siblings taking on their passions together. These siblings have helped grow these programs, not only as individuals, but as a family.
Madilyn Morris, (9), plays softball for Fair Grove with two of her older siblings, Minna Morris (12) and Gretta Morris (11). Madilyn stated, “It is great to have people on the team that know me better than anyone and they play great characters to look up to.”
Although she did voice her occasional annoyance with her sisters, she said that she believes it is a great opportunity that she gets to play with them.
Emma Padgett (11) plays basketball and runs track with her little sister Kara Padgett (10). Emma said, “I love doing sports with my sister. I’ll use basketball as an example. In basketball you have to have a connection on the court with your teammates and already having a preexisting connection with her makes it so much easier to read her and possibly know her next moves.”
Addison Voorhis (9) is also a part of the softball program, along with her twin sister Aubrie Voorhis (9). Both siblings are varsity pitchers and first basemen, making them each other’s competition. Addison expressed how the game can become much harder, as they are constantly being compared to one another.
“Some cons of playing with my sibling are that when she succeeds you are put up with the expectation to do as well, if not better than her,” stated Addison Voorhis.
On the other hand, she said how she loved supporting her sister, “I enjoy playing with my sibling because I love watching her succeed while being right there on the field.”
Addison added, “I think I would miss getting to be right there on the field when she does well so I could be one of the first ones to tell her good job.”
Aubrie explained how she also can feel tension between her and her sister during softball. She said, “There is definitely some tension with competition and always trying to be better but it always motivates each other to be better than the other.”
Gretta enjoys playing softball with her sisters, as she has gotten to play with all three of them, including Hannah Morris, a 2023 Fair Grove graduate. Gretta stated, “I’ve been sharing a sport with my siblings my entire life and it comes with its perks. In the end, they always have my back…”
High school sports can take a lot of time from student athletes and their siblings. The sports these siblings play can help grow the relationships between each other outside of their athletics.
Emma explained, “High school sports take up so much time away from out of school things and even some school things, so having that extra time to connect and grow closer to them will definitely be missed since she’s part of literally my everyday athletics.”
